Richard Ortiz was selected the Grambling State University Male Athlete of the Week after his performance in the Andre Dawson Classic and in a two-game home series against Wiley College.

Ortiz batted .450 in five games as the Tigers opened the season with a 3-2 record. He went 9-for-20 at the plate with four home runs, including three during a 15-5 win over Wiley College. Ortiz, who has a 1.050 slugging percentage and a .542 on-base percentage, finished the week with 11 RBIs and seven runs scored. Also, he drew a pair of walks.
