Position Overview: Grambling State University Athletics is seeking dynamic and enthusiastic Media/Communications Interns to join our team. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in sports media and communications while supporting the promotion of our athletic programs. As an intern, you will be assigned a specific sport to cover throughout the entirety of the season, allowing you to develop expertise and build a portfolio of work in sports journalism and content creation.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as the media contact for an assigned sport, attending practices, games, and events to gather content for coverage. Develop relationships with coaches, student-athletes, and staff to facilitate access and interviews.
- Produce written content, including game recaps, feature stories, player profiles, and press releases, to highlight the accomplishments and activities of the assigned sport. Contribute to the creation of multimedia content, such as videos, podcasts, and social media posts, to engage fans and promote team visibility.
- Assist in managing and updating the athletics department's social media channels, including Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Help develop creative and engaging content strategies to increase followers and enhance fan interaction.
- Assist with media relations efforts, including credentialing media personnel, coordinating interviews, and facilitating media access to coaches and players. Draft and distribute press releases to local media outlets and sports reporters.
- Compile and analyze statistical data related to the assigned sport, including player performance metrics, team standings, and historical trends. Use data insights to inform content creation and storytelling.
- Provide general administrative support to the communications department, such as organizing files and assisting with special projects as needed.
Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled as a student at Grambling State University, with a strong interest in journalism, communications, or related fields.
- Excellent writing skills, with the ability to craft engaging and accurate content for various platforms and audiences.
- Proficiency in social media platforms and digital content creation tools, including Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Premiere Pro) and Canva.
- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and interact professionally with coaches, athletes, and media personnel.
- Knowledge of sports media trends, terminology, and best practices, with a passion for storytelling and sports journalism.
- Availability to attend practices, games, and events for the assigned sport throughout the season, including evenings and weekends.
