Daytona Beach, Fla.-The Grambling State University Tigers led the fourth quarter by one point against the No. 1 ranked HBCU football in the nation, Bethune-Cookman University Wildcats, but Grambling State University lost their third game on the road in Daytona Beach, Fla., with a final score of 36-23.
The first half started off as a kicker's battle with Tigers'
Marc Orozco making a nice 45 yard field goal within 56 seconds of the game. Wildcats would later comeback with two field goals from Hadden Hoggarth. Their quarterback, Quentin Williams, then ran 19 yards for a touchdown with 1:17 remaining in the second quarter. Â After going for a two point conversion, the Wildcats led by 14-3.
Tigers then bounced back in the third quarter scoring 17 points. Tigers' quarterback
Stephen Johnson threw two beautiful touchdown passes to
Chad Williams and
Dominique Leake. Â Johnson, the game's top performer in passing, had an impressive 220 passing yards. He had four receptions, totaling 39 yards, along with his touchdown.
Leading the fourth quarter with 23-22, the Tigers received a roughing-the-kicker penalty. This led to the Wildcats to get a first down, which later led to a touchdown after a five yard run from Danny Dillard. In the last minute of the game, Drexler Dixon scored a touchdown from the third yard line.
The last time the Wildcats beat the Tigers was in 1954. Although this was another loss for Grambling, the Tigers made some major improvement from last week's contest.
"Better focus in practice, which led over to the game," said Tigers'
Chester Rogers, a wide receiver, Â "although we didn't play well, we beat ourselves once again." Rogers had four receptions for 15 yards. He plans to do whatever it takes to help his team get a win at the next game against Jackson State University. This will be Grambling's first conference game and fourth game on the road.
The G-Men will play JSU Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson, Miss. Kickoff is set at 6 p.m.
