Box Score

GRAMBLING -- The Grambling State University G-Men are off to a 3-0 win streak with a 80-58 win over Jarvis Christian College Wednesday (January 6) as four GSU players scored double digits.

It was a slow start for both teams with a score of 10-7 after eight minutes had expired from the clock. Things began to heat up as players Ervin Mitchell, Carlton Lowe and Mark Gray placed points on the board, giving the Tigers a 14 point lead with 7:13 remaining in the first half.

By halftime the score was 43-25. Guard/forward Deonte Hearns put up 12 points, seven rebounds and had four assists. Chris Key of Jarvis Christian had nine points and three rebounds.

Things got more intense as Jarvis Christian attempted to close the gap in points against the Tigers, coming as close to being down by 6 points. The attempt failed as the Tigers put up more points. Grambling State's biggest lead of the night came with three minutes left in the game as they were up by 27 points after Nigel Ribeiro shot and made both of two free throw shots.

Ending the game with a final score of 80-58, four players were in double digits for points. GSU's lead scorer was Mitchell with 17 points and five rebounds, Ribeiro added 16 points and four rebounds, Hearns had 14 points along with 13 rebounds and Lowe included 13 points and five rebounds. Jarvis Christian's leading scorer was Key with15 points, and he got nine rebounds.

"This game was a unique game because it was against an opponent that was supposed to be lesser," head basketball coach Shawn Walker said after the game. "We did some things tonight that would concern us. We didn't play at a consistent level for 40 minutes, but obviously we're always excited to win. We're gonna go back to the drawing board and fix the things we didn't do well and see what we can do with Southern."

On Saturday (January 9) the Tigers (5-9, 2-0 SWAC) travel to Baton Rouge to play the Southern University Jaguars at 5 p.m. in the F.G. Clark Activity Center. The Lady Tigers play Southern's Lady Jaguars at 3 p.m.
