Grambling Recovers Second Half, Races Past Prairie View A&M

DALLAS, Texas (Football) – Head Coach Broderick Fobbs and the Grambling State University Tiger football team came into the Cotton Bowl against the Prairie View A&M University Panthers with victory on their minds on Saturday evening. The Tigers overcame a 16-7 deficit at halftime and stormed back to win the game, 36-16.

With the win, Grambling improves to 3-1, overall, and 3-0 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. The Panthers move to 3-2 and 3-1 in league play.

In the first half of play, the Panthers imposed their will on the Tigers with three scores in the first quarter. PVAMU scored two points with 14:22 left in the first quarter when DeVante Kincade was sacked in the end zone by Will Skinner for a safety, 2-0. Prairie View scored again at the 12:28 mark of the first quarter as Trey Green connected with Demarquo Lastra for a 49 yards touchdown strike. Owen Hoolihan made the point after try to set the score at 9-0. The Panthers final touchdown of the night came when Dawonya Tucker rushed 33 yards to find the end zone and Hoolihan score the point after with 5:08 left in the first quarter, 16-0.

After a series of failed drives, GSU began to put together a plan of attack that led to the first touch of the game for the Tigers. With 2:42 left in the first quarter, Kincade and Chad Williams linked up for a 13 yard touchdown strike and Jonathan Wallace drilled the point after try through the uprights to make the score, 16-7.

The second quarter saw Grambling begin to dominate Prairie View as the Tigers scored nine unanswered points. Kincade used his speed and agility to rush 11 yards for a touchdown and Fred Bailey nailed the point after at the 10:39 mark, 16-14. Lorin Blain Winston was able to pick up a safety with 2:00 left in the first half to knot the game at 16. bnvfg

After halftime, the Tigers took control of the contest and never looked back. Grambling scored the lone touchdown of the third quarter. The G-Man defense was rolling on all cylinders as Guy Stallworth came up with an interception and pitched it to Ja'Terious Pouncey. Pouncey ran 27 yards to give Grambling great field position at Prairie View's 25 yard line. With 9:00 left in the quarter, running back Jestin Kelly rushed the ball twice and hammered his way into the end zone for a touchdown. Wallace made the points after to give GSU the lead, 23-16.

At the beginning of the final quarter, Kelly's number was called against as he capped off a 13 play, 80 yard drive with a touchdown at the 10:29 mark, 29-16. Wallace's point after try was blocked by Treveon Biling and Joshua Johnson.

Grambling scored the last touchdown with 3:01 left as Kincade ran the ball in himself for a touchdown and Wallace made the point after to make the score, 36-16.

Kincade was the initiator for the Grambling State offense as he finished the night going 17-of-30 for 182 yards, 14 carries for 90 yards, and three touchdowns. Kelly led the way in rushing for the G-Men with 20 carries for 117 yards and two touchdowns. In the receiving department, Williams was the leader with six catches for 83 yards and one touchdown. Derrick Dixon was the top tackler for GSU as he finished the game with five solo tackles.

Green led the Panthers going 20-of-40 with three interceptions for 205 yards and one touchdown. For the PVAMU running back corps, Tucker was the captain with 12 touches for 61 yards and one touchdown.  Lastra was the leader of the Prairie View receivers with four catches for 93 yards and one touchdown. Marquice O'Lear led the defense with nine solo tackles and one tackle for loss of 10 yards.

The Tigers will have two weeks off and return to the gridiron ready to take on the Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley State University on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 2 p.m. in Itta Bena, Miss.
