BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | The Grambling State University women's soccer team, the No. 2 seed, drew Jackson State, the No. 7 seed, in the quarterfinals of the 2017 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Women's Soccer Tournament, which is hosted by Prairie View A&M University.
GSU (9-7-1), which was predicted to finish 10th in the SWAC preseason predicted order of finish, will face off against Jackson State (record here) at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 2 at the Prairie View A&M Soccer Complex.
"We're excited to have the opportunity to compete in the SWAC tournament as the No. 2 seed and battle Jackson State," Grambling State first-year head coach
Justin Wagar said. "They played us very close earlier this year and had the lead on us for a good portion of the game before we came back late. They are a well-coached and organized team so we expect a good showing from them. We're just working out the final kinks now this week to prepare for tournament play before we arrive in Prairie View."
Grambling State defeated Jackson State, 2-1, on Sept. 29 in Grambling, La.
In that match, Grambling State fell behind in the third minute when Jalah Carter scored to give JSU a 1-0 lead. But GSU battled back and tied the game at 1 in the 63rd minute as
Janee Harris scored off an assist by
Jasmine Smith. Just six minutes later,
Kaylee Holt notched the game-winning goal to give the Grambling State the victory.
The 2017 SWAC Women's Soccer Tournament begins on Thursday with top-seed Alabama State, the defending tournament champions and regular season champs, playing Alcorn State at 10 a.m. Host Prairie View A&M, the No. 4 seed, faces off against No. 5 Texas Southern at 12:30 p.m. The third match of the day pits No. 3 Howard against Mississippi Valley State, the No. 6 seed, at 3 p.m. The final match involves Grambling State and Jackson State.
The semifinals begin on Friday, Nov. 3 with the winner of Alabama State-Alcorn State facing off against Prairie View A&M-Texas Southern. The final semifinal will match Howard-Mississippi Valley State against Grambling State-Jackson State.
