Grambling Sweeps Centenary in Double Header

SHREVEPORT, La. (Softball) – After winning a nail bitter in extra innings in game one, 6-5, the Grambling State University Lady Tigers went up 8-0 in a 9-4 victory in game two and swept the double header with Centenary College in Shreveport, La. on Tuesday evening.

With the win, Grambling improves their overall record to 3-9. The Ladies of Centenary move to 1-7 on the season.

Game One
GSU scored in the top of the first inning as Kenyshae Beasley crossed home plate on a throwing error, 1-0. Beasley singled up the middle to reach first base, advanced to second base as Mercedes Williams hit a sacrifice bunt, and stole third base. Centenary quickly answered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, 2-1. The Lady Tigers began to rally in the top of the third inning as they were able to score three runs. The second run was scored as McKenzie Johnson came home on Tayler Lenz-Selvera sacrifice fly ball into left field, 2-2. Johnson singled to reach first base, advanced to second on Beasley's fly ball, and moved to third base on Williams's fly ball. The Lady Tigers third run was scored with Beasley found home plate after Hailey Haynes singled into left field, 3-2. Beasley singled to reach first, moved to second base when Williams hit a fly ball, and advanced to third base as Lenz-Selvera flew out. The fourth run came when Monique Smith doubled to right field to drive in Haynes, 4-2. Haynes singled into left field to get on first base. The Ladies snapped up one run in the bottom of the third inning and two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to make the score, 5-4.

Centenary's late push forced the game into an extra inning and GSU did not disappoint. With Beasley placed on second base, Lenz-Selvera doubled to drive her in for the win, 6-5.

Caitlin McDowell (2-3) picks up the win for the Lady Tigers with complete game pitched for seven hits, five earned runs, two walks, and seven strikeouts.

Nichole Aldridge (1-4) suffered the loss for the Ladies with a complete game pitched for eight hits, four earned runs, one walk, and six strike outs.

Game Two
Grambling came out and quickly scored eight unanswered runs in the first four innings. Centenary attempted to mount a comeback in the bottom of the fourth inning, 8-4. GSU shut the Ladies rally down with great defensive play. Once the Lady Tigers came back up to bat, it was Lenz-Selvera with the big bat as she singled through the left side to score Beasley, 9-4. Beasley reached first base on an error, advanced to second base on Lisa Brooks' sacrifice bunt, and stole third.

Alexus Brown (1-2) earned the win with five innings pitched for eight hits, four earned runs, four walks, and two strike outs.

Lauren Beadle (0-2) took the loss for Centenary with 3.2 innings pitched for five hits, two earned runs, three walks, and three strike outs.

???????Grambling will return to action in Ruston, La. as the Lady Tigers compete in the Louisiana Tech University Invitational from Feb. 24-26.
