Tigers Splits with Texas Southern, Will Close Out Series on Sunday

HOUSTON, Texas (Baseball) – The Grambling State University baseball team traveled to Texas Southern University for a Southwestern Athletic Conference weekend series. In the first two games, the Tigers split against TSU with scores of 6-5.

In the game one, GSU dropped a nail biter game, 6-5, in 10 innings. The two teams exchanged runs and played good defense to keep the other from scoring.

The Tiger had the game all but sealed in the eighth inning as Nick Wheeler doubled to score Ace Felder, 5-3. Felder walked to reach first base. Texas Southern changed pitchers to throw Grambling off and came up with two consecutive strike outs to close the eighth.

GSU placed Texas Southern's back against the wall as they came up to bat. TSU's Gerreck Jimenez knocked home one of TSU's two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie the game, 5-5, then scored the game-winning run in the 10th on a passed ball, 6-5.

Daniel Beizer suffered the loss for Grambling, throwing two and one-thirds for one run, two strike outs, and one hit.

Michael Villanueva earned the win in relief for the TSU as he threw two and two-thirds scoreless innings for three strike outs and two hits.

In game two, Grambling evened up the series with a 6-5 win.

Texas Southern scored the first two runs of the game in the bottom of the second inning and one in the fifth inning, 3-0.

GSU was able to string together three runs in the six inning to tie the game, 3-3. Great hitting and Texas Southern errors helped Tray Bell, Daniel Barnett, and Nick Wheeler cross home plate.
TSU came back and scored two more runs to take the lead, 5-3.

The Tigers rallied back and scored three more runs to grab the win, 6-5. Ace Felder scored as Wesley Drain singled through the right side. Marshawn Taylor came home on a balk. Bell hit a game winning sacrifice fly to score Drain.

Isaac O'Bear (2-2) snapped up the win for GSU with eight innings pitched for 11 hits, four earned runs, and four strike outs. Raul Baduel picked up his first save of the season facing two batters for no hits or runs.

Ryan Hawkins (0-2) suffered the loss with one hit and one earned run.

The Tigers will close their series with TSU on Sunday at 1 p.m.
