Box Score HATTIESBURG, Miss. | The Grambling State University women's soccer team trailed at the break by just one goal, but Southern Miss put the game away in the second half with three goals as the Lady Tigers fell, 4-1, on Thursday at the Marshall Bell Soccer Complex.
"We lost to a very talented Southern Miss team today," Grambling State head coach
Justin Wagar said. "Southern Miss is an athletic squad with a lot of dangerous attacking players. I give credit to them as they were very organized and well coached."
The Golden Eagles (4-0-0) opened the scoring in the 36th minute as Katie Richmond scored on an unassisted goal.
Southern Miss doubled the advantage in the 61st minute as Ala Akinniyi picked up her first goal of the season to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead. Just two minutes later, Akinniyi notched her second goal of the day off an assist by Miah Zuazua as Southern Miss extended the lead to 3-0.
Grambling State (1-2-0) didn't go away quietly as
Brittany Terry assisted on
Kiawna Mounts goal to cut the deficit to 3-1 in the 69th minute. Terry's flick throw found Mounts, who lofted a shot over the goalkeeper.
However, Southern Miss put the game away in the 86th minute as Andrea Rivera scored on an unassisted goal to give the Golden Eagles a 4-1 advantage.
Turning Point
The Lady Tigers trailed 1-0 at the break and fell behind 2-0 in the 61st minute. However, Grambling State surrendered the third goal just two minutes later.
Ala Akinniyi's two goals were the difference in the game and she picked up both of those within a three-minute span in the second half.
Inside the Numbers
· Grambling State goalkeeper Killie Harrison finished with eight saves in 90 minutes of action.
· Kelly Brahmbhatt and Kendell Mindnich combined for one save in goal for the Golden Eagles.
· Southern Miss out-shot Grambling State, 26-3, including a 17-1 advantage in the second half.
· The Golden Eagles held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Grambling State returns to action on Friday at the GSU Soccer Complex as the Lady Tigers face Nicholls State. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. Nicholls State comes into the game at 0-2-0 after falling to Mississippi Valley State, 1-0, on Aug. 20.
