Second-half goal dooms GSU in home loss

9/1/2017 8:54:00 PM

Box Score GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University women's soccer team returned home less than 24 hours after a defeat at Southern Miss on Thursday as the Lady Tigers surrendered a second-half goal to Nicholls State in a 1-0 loss on Friday at the GSU Soccer Complex.

"It was too little too late for us today," Grambling State head coach Justin Wagar said. "After giving up a second-half goal the Tigers offense finally came to life and started pressing to goal, getting six shots in the final 25 minutes, including three really great looks in front of the goal. The Nicholls State goalkeeper made a great goal-line save off a corner. Time just ran out before the Tigers could net the equalizer."

After a scoreless first half, Nicholls State (1-2-0) broke the tie in the 60th minute as Kirstie Champagne scored on an unassisted goal, which proved to be the difference in the home defeat.

Grambling State (1-3-0) had one shot on goal as Brittany Terry forced Colonials goalkeeper Roosa Hurmerinta to make the stop.

Turning Point
The two teams combined for 33 fouls as Grambling State held a 17-16 in that category. But the biggest difference was shots on goal.

Neither team took many shots for either goalkeeper to stop. In fact, the Colonials finished the night with just two shots on goal, but one of those was the game-winner that Champagne put away to give Nicholls State the 1-0 lead.
