Lady Tigers continue shutout streak

GSU blanks Alabama State for fifth consecutive shutout

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The Grambling State University women's soccer team continued its shutout streak on Sunday afternoon with a 1-0 victory over Alabama State in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) match.

"It was a great battle today at Alabama State," Grambling State head coach Justin Wagar said. "Both teams played good soccer and showed a lot of heart. I am proud of the focus our team had this week."

The Lady Tigers (11-7 overall, 8-1 SWAC) have not allowed a goal in 570 minutes and ran their shutout streak to five games with the win over Alabama State. Grambling State now has 24 points and trails Howard by one point (25), as the Bison defeated Southern, 2-1, on Sunday to conclude SWAC play. The Lady Tigers will need to defeat Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Thursday in order to claim the top seed in the 2018 SWAC Women's Soccer Championship. Grambling State has already sealed the second spot, but the victory would give the Lady Tigers the SWAC regular season championship.

After a scoreless first half, Grambling State finally broke through in the 74th minute as Kaylee Holt, who has scored a goal in the last six games and eight out of the last nine games, found the back of the net on a penalty kick to give the Lady Tigers a 1-0 advantage.

Defensively, Rita Siaha earned her fourth consecutive shutout as she faced one shot in 90 minutes of action. Siaha has not surrendered a goal in the last 360 minutes.
