Lady Tigers fight hard at JSU Sonic Boom Invitational

11/12/2018 4:52:00 PM

JACKSON, Miss. | The Grambling State University women's bowling team was in action over the weekend as the Lady Tigers fought hard and had several person bests at the Jackson State University Sonic Boom Invitational.

The Lady Tigers (1-25) went 0-13 over the weekend, but that didn't stop the student-athletes from having several top performances.

Four bowlers – Khalilla Onojeta, Jennifer Pickens, Danna Galeano and Kayra Carter – set collegiate bests for individual high scores and the fifth player (Ariel Henderson) set a team-record with six consecutive strikes to end a game. Onojeta rolled a 192 against Jackson State, while Pickens registered a 166 against Prairie View A&M. Galeano, who is also a member of the GSU tennis team, rolled a 132 against Jackson State and Carter had a team-high 204 against Jackson State.

"I am proud of the way the ladies finally pulled together before the three-day tournament," Grambling State head coach Kenneth Myers said. "It was completely showing themselves what they could achieve by coming together and setting individual collegiate bests and team highs this weekend. In the continued absence of a key player, some of the coaches gave praise to our team for how well they played and how they came together to accomplish collegiate bests. We are hoping to take what we learned at this event and continue to move forward with the attitude and effort of working together."

On the final day of the competition, Grambling State faced off against Alabama A&M in the bracket-style format. In the best-of-seven match, the Lady Tigers fell behind, 2-0, but fought back to grab a 3-2 lead. Unfortunately, Grambling State could not hold off the Lady Bulldogs in the 4-2 loss.
