Box Score 2 ITTA BENA, Miss. | The Grambling State University softball team opened Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play on Saturday as the Lady Tigers were swept in a doubleheader to host Mississippi Valley State at MVSU Field.

Grambling State (8-13 overall, 0-2 SWAC) dropped the first game, 6-5, and fell in the second contest, 7-2.

In the opener, Grambling State struck for one run in the top of the first, but Mississippi Valley State (6-16, 2-0) answered with three runs in the bottom to take a 3-1 advantage.

The Devilettes added to the lead with one run in the third and two in the fourth for a 6-1 advantage.

Back came Grambling State with one run in the fourth and two in the fifth to close the gap to 6-4.

The Lady Tigers tried to rally in the seventh when Talyer Lenz-Selvera tripled with one out and came in to score on a ground out by
Morgan Adams.
Allye Hartley popped up to end the game and the Grambling State rally.

In the second game, Mississippi Valley State used a four-run first inning and three-run fifth to earn a 7-2 victory.

Inside the Numbers
* In the first game, Grambling State scored five runs on eight hits, committed two errors and stranded six on base.

Mercedes Williams,
Tayler Lenz-Selvera and
Morgan Adams each recorded two hits.

Tiffany Doss and
Monique Smith registered one hit a piece.
* Caitlyn McDowell (6-4) took the loss as she surrendered six runs (four earned) on 10 hits, walked two and fanned two in six innings.
* Mississippi Valley State finished with six runs on 10 hits, had a pair of errors and left seven on base.
* Dejanae Gage led the Devilettes at the plate by going 3-for-3, with one RBI and one run scored.
*Chandler Ellis picked up the win in five innings of work. She gave up four runs (three earned) on seven hits and struck out a pair.
* Jezabelle Quintana worked two innings in relief.
* In the second game, Grambling State scored two runs on six hits, committed two errors and left 10 on base.

D'Maria Matthews (2-6) took the loss as she was tagged for seven runs (six earned) on nine hits, with four walks and one strikeout.

* Jodeci Afoa-Tuia and Lacy Wilburn each registered two hits to pace the Devilettes.
* Alyssa Montes pitched a complete game to earn the win. She gave up two runs (one earned) on six hits, walked three and fanned two.

Grambling State will finish off the final game of the three-game SWAC series with Mississippi Valley State later this season due to inclement weather scheduled in the forecast on Sunday. The Lady Tigers return to action on Friday against Alabama A&M at the GSU Softball Complex. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
