Owls too much in series sweep of Tigers

KENNESAW, Ga. | The Grambling State University baseball team ended a four-game road trip on Sunday as Kennesaw State completed a three-game non-conference sweep of the Tigers with a 14-2 victory at Stillwell Baseball Stadium.
 
Grambling State (12-13) struck first with one run in the opening inning as Richard Ortiz scored on Rafael Ramirez's double to give the Tigers an early 1-0 advantage.
 
The Grambling State lead quickly evaporated in the bottom of the frame as Kennesaw State (12-12) plated three runs on three hits to take a 3-1 advantage.
 
The Owls' offense continued where it led off in the first two games of the series, scoring two runs in the second, five in the third, three in the fourth and one in the fifth to grab a 14-2 lead.
 
The Tigers picked up their other run in the top of the third when Marshawn Taylor, who reached on an error, came in to score when Isaiah Torres took first on an error.
 
Inside The Numbers
* Grambling State finished with two runs on five hits, committed one error and stranded seven on base.
* Richard Ortiz led the way for the Tigers offensively by going 2-for-3 with one run scored.
* Rafael Ramirez III, D'Quan Matthews and Isaiah Torres had one hit each.
* Anthony Hernandez (1-2) took the loss as he surrendered 10 runs (seven earned) on nine hits, with seven walks and one strikeout in 2.2 innings pitched.
* Ryan Evans, Raul Baduel and Kaelin Woodward worked in relief.
* Kennesaw State finished with 14 runs on 13 hits, with two errors and left 10 on base.
* Griffin Helms went 3-for-3, with three runs batted in, while Grant Williams was 1-for-2, with three RBIs and one run scored.
* Jake Rothwell (1-1) picked up the win as he gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits, with seven strikeouts and two walks.
* Logan Hutchinson, Brian Exley and Jordan Krueger worked in relief.
 
Up Next
Grambling State returns home for five straight games, starting on Tuesday in a non-conference single game against Texas College. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones Park.
