GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University baseball team will enter next week's Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tournament as the No. 2 seed from the West Division and will face Mississippi Valley State, the East No. 3 seed, on Wednesday, May 16 at Wesley Barrow Stadium in New Orleans, La.
The Tigers (23-23) finished conference play with a 14-10 record, while the Delta Devils garnered a 9-15 mark in SWAC action.
Grambling State will be seeking its first tournament win since 2015 when the Tigers defeated Texas Southern (6-0). GSU has dropped its last six SWAC Tourney games, dating back to that 2015 season. The Tigers last met the Delta Devils was in the 2011 SWAC Baseball Tournament where Grambling State blanked Mississippi Valley State, 4-0, in Shreveport, La.
Alabama State and Texas Southern received the top seeds after winning their respective divisions. The Hornets, the East No. 1 seed, will meet Prairie View A&M, the West No. 4 seed, on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The winner of that game will face the winner of the Grambling State/Mississippi Valley State game on Thursday (May 17) at 6 p.m. Meanwhile, the losers of those two games will face off in an elimination game at noon on May 17.
On the other side of the bracket, Texas Southern, the No. 1 seed from the West, will meet Alcorn State, the East No. 4 seed) at 3 p.m. on Wednesday. The first game of the day pits the No. 2 seed from the East, Jackson State, against No. 4 seed from the West, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, with the first pitch set for 9 a.m. The winners of those two games face off at 3 p.m. on May 17, while the losers meet in an elimination game at 9 a.m. on May 17.
The 2018 SWAC Baseball Tournament will take place May 16-20 at Wesley Barrow Stadium in New Orleans, La. and this year's championship will be televised live on ESPNEWS with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. The winner of the tournament will receive the SWAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Tournament.
