Grambling State drops opening game to TSU

HOUSTON, Texas | The Grambling State University baseball team came into its Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) series with Texas Southern needing a sweep to win the West Division, or at the very least win two games to have a shot at winning the division.

Those odds were dampened a bit on Friday as Grambling State dropped an 8-1 decision to Texas Southern at MacGregor Park.

Texas Southern (22-25 overall and 16-5 SWAC) pounded out 13 hits and took advantage of four Grambling State errors to pick up the win. GSU must now win the next two games and hope for Southern to defeat Texas Southern in a makeup game to at least earn a share of the division title. On the flipside, GSU sits one game ahead of Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the standings and could drop to third depending on how the UAPB-Prairie View A&M series shapes up, which will begin on Saturday.

Regardless of any outcomes this weekend, Grambling State can do no worse than third place in the division ahead of the SWAC Baseball Tournament (May 16-20).

TSU struck first with one run in the third and three in the fourth to grab a 4-0 lead.

Grambling State answered with one run in the top of the seventh as Drexler Macaay homered to left, cutting the margin to 4-1.

However, Texas Southern plated three in the bottom of the frame and added an insurance run in the eighth to earn the victory.
