Ramirez selected to Academic All-America Second Team

AUSTIN, Texas | Grambling State University sophomore First Baseman/Designated Hitter Rafael Ramirez was named on Thursday to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America® Division I Baseball Second Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA).
 
Ramirez, who is a kinesiology major and boasts a 3.88 GPA, had an outstanding sophomore season for the Black and Gold. He earned several honors throughout the season, including being a two-time Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Hitter of the Week selection, All-SWAC Second-Team and All-SWAC Tournament Team honors.
 
The San Antonio, Texas native was second on the team in batting with a .353 average in 170 at-bats. He played in 47 games and started in 45, with 60 hits, including a team-high 17 doubles and 16 home runs. He drove in a team-high 66 runners and scored 36 times. Ramirez was second on the team in walks with 24 and was hit by a pitch seven times.
 
Nationally, Ramirez ranks first in runs batted in, fifth in slugging percentage, 13th in home runs per game and 22nd in runs batted in.
 
The Google Cloud Academic All-America® Division I Baseball Team produced an average GPA of 3.90 with the first team combining for an average GPA of 3.97. The team includes 11 student-athletes with 4.0 GPA and two graduate students.
