THIBODAUX, La. | The Grambling State University baseball team managed three hits as the Tigers dropped the series opener to Nicholls State, 6-1, on Friday night at Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field.
Grambling State (2-3) scored a run in the top of the fourth inning, but were held scoreless over the final five innings, thanks in part to solid pitching from Trever Kilcrease, Peter Holland and Zach Autin.
How It Happened
After a scoreless first three innings, Grambling State took advantage of two errors to plate one run in the top of the fourth.
Rafael Ramirez III opened the frame with a walk and moved to second on an
Isaiah Torres base hit to left.
Richard Ortiz reached on a fielder's choice as Torres advanced to second and Ramirez was out at third.
Garrett Smith followed and reached on an error, which allowed Torres to score. However,
Michael Sookdeo and
Kristian Franklin struck out and grounded out, respectively, to end the inning.
Nicholls State in the bottom of the inning with three runs, courtesy of a three-run homer to left by Dane Simon, to grab a 3-1 lead.
The Colonials added a run in the bottom of the seventh and two more in the eighth to take a 6-1 lead.

> Grambling State finished with one run on three hits, committed a season-high three errors and left five on base

Isaiah Torres went 2-for-4, with the lone run, while
Richard Ortiz was 1-for-4

Bryan Delgado (1-1) took the loss as he gave up three runs on five hits, walked three and fanned three in six innings

> Nicholls State finished with six runs on eight hits, committed two errors and stranded five on base
> Austin France and Nathan Tribble each registered two hits for the Colonials, with France scoring twice and Tribble
> Dane Simon delivered a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning to give the Colonials a 3-1 advantage
> Trever Kilcrease ((1-0) started for Nicholls and went 6.0 innings. He gave up one unearned run and scattered two hits, with eight strikeouts and a pair of walks
> Peter Holland and Zach Autin worked the final three innings in relief
