Lady Tigers drop home tilt to Devilettes

GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University softball team racked up eight hits in the opener, but it wasn't enough in a 10-6 loss to Mississippi Valley State on Tuesday afternoon at the GSU Softball Complex.
 
Grambling State (8-3) and Mississippi Valley State were scheduled for a doubleheader, but the second game was suspended in the fifth inning due to darkness. At the time the game was halted, the Devilettes (1-9) were holding a 7-2 advantage.
 
How It Happened
Mississippi Valley State plated six runs on four hits and took advantage of one error to grab a 6-0 lead in the top of the first.
 
Grambling State cut the margin to 6-2 with one run in the first and two runs in the second.
 
The Lady Tigers closed the gap to 6-4 with two runs in the fourth.
 
With one down in the frame, Tayler Lenz-Selvera singled to left and stole second. After a Kenyshae Beasley walk, Antiya Randle doubled to left center to plate two runs.
 
Back came Mississippi Valley State with one run in the fifth and three more in the sixth for a 10-5 lead.
 
The Lady Tigers tried to rally in the seventh, but came away with just one run in the 10-6 loss.
 
Inside the Numbers
> Grambling State finished with six runs on eight hits, committed one error and left nine on base
> Kenyshae Beasley paced the Lady Tiger offense by going 2-for-3, with a pair of runs scored
> Tyra Triplett, Antiya Randle, Andreana Reynolds, Rikkelle Miller, Morgan Adams and Tayler Lenz-Selvera each recorded one hit
> D'Maria Matthews took the loss as she was tagged for 10 runs (eight earned) on 11 hits, with five walks and one strikeout
> Mississippi Valley State registered 10 runs on 11 hits and stranded five on base
> Dejanae Gage led MVSU at the plate by going 3-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in, while Jewel Unga went 2-for-3, with one RBI and one run scored
> Alyssa Montes picked up the win in seven innings pitched. She gave up six runs on eight hits, walked five and struckout two
 
Up Next
Grambling State returns to action in the HBCU Classic this weekend. The Lady Tigers will meet Lincoln (10 a.m.) and Langston (12 p.m.) on Friday and conclude play on Saturday against Prairie View A&M (10 a.m.) and Langston (2 p.m.).
