GSU lets lead slip away in SWAC opener

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The Grambling State University softball team could not hold on to a one-run lead late as the Lady Tigers dropped their Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) opener to Alabama State, 2-1, on Friday night at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex.
 
Grambling State (10-6 overall, 0-1 SWAC) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fifth, but Alabama State (10-10, 1-0) rallied with one run in the sixth and won the game in the seventh.
 
How It Happened
After four scoreless innings to begin the game, Grambling State took advantage of an error to grab a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth.
 
Morgan Adams opened the frame and was hit by a pitch. Adams advanced to second on a ground out and with two down, Antiya Randle walked. Rikkelle Miller was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Tia Coleman followed and reached on an error as Adams scored from third.
 
Alabama State answered in the sixth and tied the game at 1 after Alexis Sydnor homered to left center.
 
The Lady Hornets picked up run in the bottom of the seventh to capture the SWAC victory.
 
Inside the Numbers
> Grambling State finished with one run on seven hits, committed one error and stranded 11 on base
> Rikkelle Miller led the way at the plate by going 3-for-3, while Tayler Lenz-Selvera was 2-for-3
> Tia Coleman and Morgan Adams had one hit each
> Ja'Lynn Bonner took the loss as she gave up two runs on 10 hits and walked three in seven innings
> Alabama State finished with two runs on 10 hits, committed two errors and left six on base
> Alexis Sydnor led the Lady Hornets by going 3-for-3, with one run scored and one RBI
> Justine Jean pitched seven innings to earn the victory. She surrendered one run on seven hits, fanned four and walked two

Grambling State concludes its three-game SWAC series with a doubleheader against Alabama State on Saturday. First pitch for the twinbill is set for 1 p.m. from the Barbara Williams Softball Complex.
