Grambling State picks up first SWAC win

BATON ROUGE, La. | The Grambling State University softball team scored two runs in the fifth inning and held off a late rally to earn its first Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) victory with a 3-1 win over rival Southern on Friday at Jaguar Field.
 
Grambling State (13-13 overall, 1-6 SWAC) managed just four hits throughout the seven-inning contest, but capitalized on one error in the seventh to earn the win.
 
How It Happened
After four scoreless innings, Grambling State broke through with a pair of runs on two hits in the top half of the fifth inning.
 
With one down in the frame, Tyler Robinson tripled down the right field line and Kenyshae Beasley reached on fielder's choice. With two outs, Robinson scored when the Jaguars failed to pick off Beasley at second. Morgan Adams delivered a clutch two-out hit to right to plate Beasley, giving the Lady Tigers a 2-0 lead.
 
Grambling State added another run in the seventh when Beasley, who reached on a two-out infield hit, scored on a throwing error by the catcher.
 
Southern (6-15, 4-3) loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Matthews got Kameri Mott to strikeout swinging to end the game.

> Grambling State finished with three runs on four hits and stranded four on base
> Morgan Adams, Rikkelle Miller, Tyler Robinson and Kenyshae Beasley each collected one hit
> D'Maria Matthews (8-6) gave up one run on seven hits, with five strikeouts and three walks in seven innings to earn the victory
> Southern finished with one run on seven hits, committed a pair of errors and left eight on base
> Jaslyn Perrodin led the Jaguars at the plate by going 2-for-4
> Aubrion James (5-6) took the loss in seven innings pitched. She gave up three runs on four hits, fanned four and walked one
 
Up Next
Grambling State concludes its three-game SWAC series against Southern on Saturday with a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Lady Jaguar Field.
