GRAMBLING, La. | Grambling State University Athletics announced that
McKenzie Johnson and
Kevin Whitaker, Jr. were selected the Women's and Men's Student-Athletes of the Week.
Johnson played in four games last week against Louisiana Tech and Prairie View A&M. She batted .300 (3-for-10), with two doubles and one home run. In addition, she scored three times and drove in two runs. She registered a .800 slugging percentage and a .462 on-base percentage. The Fort Worth, Texas native was 1-for-1 in stolen base attempts, was hit by a pitch twice and walked once. Her home run against PVAMU helped the Lady Tigers set a single-season record for home run record.
Whitaker, the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Hitter of the Week and College Sports Madness SWAC Player of the Week, went 12-for-17 at the plate for a .705 batting average in games against Mississippi Valley State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The junior from Richmond, Calif. drove in six runs and scored six runs as well, collecting four extra-base hits (three doubles, one triple).
In the three-game sweep of Arkansas-Pine Bluff over the weekend, Whitaker batted .769 (10-for-13), with three doubles and one triple. He recorded 15 total bases, slugged 1.154 and had a .813 on-base percentage.
