Grambling State suffers road setback to NSU

NATCHITOCHES, La. | The Grambling State University softball team was held in check for most of the night as the Lady Tigers were edged, 2-1, to Northwestern State on Wednesday at the Lady Demon Diamond.
 
Grambling State (16-23) trailed 2-0 until the sixth when the Lady Tigers got a timely hit by Tia Coleman to drive in the lone GSU run.
 
How It Happened
Northwestern State (24-21) struck for one run on a pair of hits in the bottom of the first inning to grab a quick 1-0 advantage.
 
The Lady Demons doubled the lead in the third with one run to increase the lead to 2-0.
 
Grambling State cut the deficit in half, 2-1, with a run in the sixth.
 
McKenzie Johnson was hit by a pitch and Tayler Lenz-Selvera walked. With two outs and two strikes, Tia Coleman hit a shallow ball into left center to plate Johnson, who raced around third and scored.

> Grambling State finished with one run on four hits, committed one error and stranded five on base
> Tyra Triplett led the way offensively by going 2-for-2
> McKenzie Johnson and Tia Coleman each collected one hit
> Ja'Lynn Bonner (3-7) took the loss as she surrendered two runs on eight hits, walked two and struck out one in six innings
> Northwestern State finished with two runs on eight hits and left nine on base
> Cayla Jones, Maggie Black and Emma Hawthorne each recorded two hits
> Samantha Guile picked up the win in four innings of work. She gave up one run on one hit, fanned four and walked one
> E.C. Delafield started and went three innings. She fanned seven and scattered three hits
 
Up Next
Grambling State will make-up its Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) game with Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The two teams are tentatively set to play on Saturday, May 4 at the GSU Softball Complex. Game time will be announced at a later date.
