Four tabbed to All-SWAC Baseball Second Team

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | The Grambling State University baseball program placed four student-athletes on the All-Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Second Team, the conference announced during a reception on Tuesday night.
 
Bryan Delgado (starting pitcher), Drexler Macaay (catcher), Kevin Whitaker, Jr. (infielder) and Isaiah Torres (outfielder) earned all-conference honors.
 
Delgado was the top weekend starter for the Tigers this season as he compiled a 6-3 record and a team-best 3.30 ERA. He recorded two complete games and worked in 79.0 innings, with a team-high 60 strikeouts. In addition, the New York, N.Y. native was selected the SWAC Pitcher of the Week on April 29.
 
Macaay is fifth on team in batting with a .311 average in 167 at-bats. He has registered 52 hits, including 10 doubles, a team-high eight home runs and one triple. He's scored 44 times and has driven in 34 runs. In addition, the Curacao, Puerto Rico native drew 29 walks and was hit by a pitch 10 times. He was named the SWAC Hitter of the Week on March 18.
 
Whitaker is second on the team in batting with a .331 average in 157 at-bats. He has registered 52 hits, with eight doubles, a team-high three triples and two home runs. Also, the Richmond, Calif. native has 34 RBIs and 34 runs scored, along with drawing 13 walks and being hit by a pitch six times. He was tabbed the SWAC Hitter of the Week on April 22.
 
Torres led the team in numerous categories in playing all 47 games. He batted .344 in 180 at-bats, white 62 hits, including 14 doubles, two triples and one home run. He drove in 37 and scored 30 times. In addition, the Brooklyn, N.Y. native walked a team-high 34 times and was hit by a pitch five times.
 
Joining the Tiger four players on the second team were Nick Kreutzer (first baseman – Arkansas-Pine Bluff), Jonathan Smith (second baseman – Alabama A&M), Jaylyn Williams (third baseman – Jackson State), Johnny Johnson (designated hitter – Southern), Equon Smith (outfielder – Jackson State), Noel Cheneau (outfielder – Alabama State), Elijah Finney (starting pitcher – Southern) and Aaron Barkley (relief pitcher – Mississippi Valley State).
 
Alabama State and Southern tied for the most selections on the All-SWAC First Team with four. Jackson State and Texas Southern each had two named to the first team.
 
Tyler LaPorte, of Southern, and Yamil Pagan, of Alabama State, were selected the SWAC Co-Players of the Year. Pagan earned Hitter of the Year honors, while teammate Darren Kelly collected the Pitcher of the Year award. Southern's Connor Whalen earned Relief Pitcher of the Year, while Equan Smith (Jackson State) and Ricardo Rivera (Alabama State) were tabbed the Newcomer and Freshman of the Year, respectively. Kerrick Jackson, of Southern, earned the Coach of the Year honors.
 
Grambling State, the No. 2 seed from the West, opens the 2019 SWAC Baseball Tournament on Wednesday against Alcorn State, the East No. 3 seed. First pitch against the Braves is set for 9 a.m. from Wesley Barrow Stadium in New Orleans, La.
