Box Score GRAMBLING, La | The Grambling State University women's soccer team remains undefeated at home after battling a talented Northwestern State University team who just came off back to back road games against nationally ranked programs. The Lady Tigers picked up their second shutout of the season defeating the Lady Demons, 1-0 at the GSU Soccer Complex.
Grambling State (3-1) played a bit frantic in the first half trying to size up their opponents but settled down while holding onto a tie going into the break. The Lady Tigers were unable to get in a rhythm in the first 45 minutes, but gelled together in the second half and strung some passes together while playing a more coordinated team effort.
Grambling State's defense pressured backed Northwestern (0-3) deep into their end and forced a turnover in front of the net in which freshmen
Makayla Miller deflected through to onrushing
Michaela Danyo who took a set up touch behind the defense and slotted it home for the game winner. Senior goalkeeper
Hanna Johnson played all 90 minutes for the shutout and came up with some clutch saves to preserve the victory.
"I'm really proud of the girls and their will to compete," said Head Coach
Justin Wagar. "We had a few players go down with injuries and it was encouraging to see fellow teammates step up and keep the pace going and bring energy into the game. We're still learning and growing as a young team. Each week our opponents get a little bit stronger and this is an opportunity to adapt and learn as we prepare for conference play in a month. Come out and catch a game if you haven't seen the team play. We play an exciting brand of soccer."
