Loss snaps 3-game conference win streak

Box Score LORMAN, Miss. | The Grambling Tigers had their three-game Southwestern Athletic Conference win streak snapped with a 87-69 loss to Alcorn State University at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.

Grambling (9-8, 3-1 SWAC) went back and forth early on and trailed by just one point with 6:19 left in the first half after senior point guard Ivy Smith, Jr. scored a layup. However, the Tigers were unable to stop the barrage of 3-pointers as Alcorn hit a total of 13 in the game. The Tigers trailed by eight points at the break but had defensive lapses throughout the second half, giving up nearly 50-second half points to the Braves.

As a team, the Tigers shot extremely well from the field, hitting over 50 percent of their shots for the game; however, Grambling struggled from the free throw line, hitting less than 50 percent of their attempts.

Cameron Christion led Grambling with 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field. He also grabbed nine boards in the loss while fellow Tiger Devante Jackson finished with 14 points and five rebounds. Smith, Jr. chipped in with 11 points, three assists and two steals.

Trevell Cunningham came off the bench for the Tigers and added 10 points, four rebounds and four assists in the loss. 

As a team, Grambling produced 16 assists while Alcorn generated 25.

The Braves were led by Maurice Howard who finished with a game-high 24 points while teammate Deshaw Andrews added 18 points in the victory.

> Grambling State shot 51 percent (27-of-53) from the floor and 47 percent (9-of-19) from the charity stripe
> Alcorn was 29-of-59 (49 percent) from the field and 16-of-22 (73 percent) from the foul line
> GSU registered 30 rebounds, including five on the offensive glass
> Alcorn pulled down 34 rebounds, with eight coming on the offensive end
> The Tigers finished with 26 points in the paint, 22 bench points, nine second-chance points and eight fast break points
> The Braves recorded 26 points in the paint, 18 bench points, 13 second-chance points and 12 fast break points

The Tigers continue conference play on Saturday, January 18 as they head back home to host Prairie View A&M. Tip-off against the Panthers is set for 5:30 p.m. at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center in the second of two games of the SWAC doubleheader.
