Box Score 2 PHOENIX/Tuscon, Ariz. | The Grambling State Tigers men's basketball team traveled to Arizona for a two-game road trip for its season opener against Grand Canyon University and the University of Arizona. Here's how the action panned out.
"The Arizona trip was a tough way to open the season," said Grambling head coach
Donte' Jackson. "We played two good teams. Grand Canyon is predicted to win their league, and Arizona is a traditional basketball power. I feel like our guys competed well and adjusted well to being on the road."Â
Game 1Â
Grand Canyon 69Â Â Grambling 53
In the season opener, The Tigers trailed 34-23 at the break at the GCU Arena, but poured in 30 second-half points on the road behind three double-scorers including 10 points from
Terreon Randolph while junior
Cameron Christon and senior
Kelton Edwards both tied a team-high with 12 points. Senior forward Brian Thomas led the Tigers with six rebounds, while senior
Prince Moss chipped in with eight points and five boards.
Alessandro Lever finished with a game-high 18 points for Grand Canyon.
"Our first game against GCU, I felt like we were out of sync early, but as the game went on, we settled down and played better," said Jackson. "We maybe had some first game jitters, then
Trevell Cunningham rolled his ankle early in the start of the first half."Â
Game 2
Arizona 74Â Â Grambling 55
In game two of the Arizona road trip, the Tigers gave up 39 first-half points to the Wildcats and could not recover, despite only being outscored by three points in the latter half. As a team Grambling shot less than 33 percent from the field and grabbed 37 boards.
"Our second game against Arizona was competitive throughout the entire game," said Coach Jackson. "We had better ball movement, floor spacing, and shot the ball better from the free throw line. Unfortunately, Arizona had the last run at the end of the game."
Woodall finished with a team-high and tied a game-high with 19 points, including 6-of-11 shooting from the field. The junior transfer out of Raymond, Miss. nailed all six of his free-throw attempts while
Trevell Cunningham added eight points against Arizona. James Akinjo and Jordan Brown both finished with 19 points apiece for the Wildcats.
Coach Jackson added, "our guys defended well this past weekend. Now we need to find out shooting stroke as we head into our home opener."
