Lady Tigers pick up 1st win of season at UIW Cardinal Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 SAN ANTONIO, Texas | The Grambling State University softball team participated in the University of Incarnate Word Cardinal Invitational. The team totaled five games in two days in their second tournament of the season.

Here's how the weekend's action panned out:

Game 1
Delaware 9
Grambling 4

The Lady Tigers (0-5) took an early two-run lead in the top of the first inning, but the Blue Hens answered back in the bottom half of the stanza with two runs of their own to tie the ball game up at two apiece. Grambling added two additional runs in the top of the third, but Delaware answered back with four runs in the bottom half of the inning, taking a 6-4 leading heading into the fourth.

Delaware sealed the deal with three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, but had a total of seven errors on the night.

Starting pitcher Ja'Lynn Bonner (0-2) was credited with the loss, striking  out two Blue Hen batters while giving up eight earned runs in six innings of work for Grambling.

The Blue Hens were led by Karolina Flores who finished with two hits, two runs and two RBI.

Game 2
Fairleigh Dickinson 4

The Lady Tigers (0-6) got behind early in the first inning when Fairleigh Dickinson scored two runs. However, Grambling answered back with a run of their own in the bottom of the third inning when Fayth Mcqueary stole home. Fairleigh Dickinson added two more runs, one in the top of the fifth and one in the top of the sixth to take a 4-1 lead before the Lady Tigers answered back with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Tyra Triplett scored an inside the park home run, cutting the deficit to just two runs. Unfortunately, that was Grambling's last run scored as they fell 4-2 and managed just three total hits on the afternoon.

Triplett finished with a hit, a run and an RBI.

Starting pitcher Payton Shells (0-1) was credited with the loss. She struck out a total of five batters and gave up nine hits and four runs for Grambling.

Fairleigh Dickinson was led by Riley De Laval who finished with three hits, one run and one RBI.

Grambling defeated Cleveland State for the first victory of the year.

Game 3

The Lady Tigers (1-6) finally tasted victory for the first time this season as they took a 1-0 lead in the third inning in this low scoring affair as sophomore sensation Rikkelle Miller homered to left field to score the games' winning run. Starting pitcher D'Maria Matthews pitched a complete game, giving up just four hits, zero runs and striking out three Cleveland State batters.

Anaiyah Fultz and Cameron Ellis both finished with two hits apiece for the Lady Tigers.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Grambling added an insurance run when Armani Babin crossed home plate on a Lady Magnus' error.

Cleveland State was led by Sydney Bajusz who finished with a team-high two hits in the loss.

Game 4
Incarnate Word 2
Grambling 1

The Lady Tigers (1-7) scored their only run in the opening inning when Fultz hit a single down the left field line which eventually brought in teammate Tyra Triplett across home plate. However, the tourney host answered back in the bottom half of the stanza and tied things up at one apiece.

Incarnate Word then scored the go ahead run in the third inning and held on for the slim victory as no more runs were scored in the ball game.

Grambling produced just five hits on the night including one from Triplett, Fultz, Fayth Mcqueary, Antiya Randle and Nyah Jones.

Lady Tigers pitcher Payton Shells (0-2) was credited with the loss as she struck out two batters in six innings of work and gave up just one earned run in the loss.  

Incarnate Word was led by Kendall McGary who finished with a team-high two hits.

Game 5
Fairleigh Dickinson 9
Grambling 2

Grambling (1-8) suffered their worst loss of the tournament in this contest as pitcher Ja'Lynn Bonner (0-2) was credited with the loss as she gave up three earned runs in four innings pitched, including one strike out.

On offense, McQueary led the team with two hits while Fultz picked up Grambling's lone RBI. Fultz and McQueary also scored the only runs for the Lady Tigers.in the loss.

The Lady Tigers continue non-conference play on Saturday, February 22 as they travel to Montgomery, Ala. to face Murray State University in game one of the Alabama State University Black & Gold Tournament II. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
