Christon leads Grambling with 14 points

HOUSTON, Texas | The Grambling Tigers were eliminated by Texas Southern in the quarterfinal of the 2020 Cricket Wireless SWAC Men's Basketball Tournament by the score of 75-62 at the HP&E Arena.

Grambling (17-15, 11-7 SWAC) was led by redshirt sophomore Cameron Christon who finished with a team-high 14 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field, including 2-for-4 from downtown. Christon added five rebounds but had four turnovers in the loss while fellow Tiger Terreon Randolph produced a double-double, scoring 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field and grabbing 11 rebounds for Grambling.

Senior point guard Ivy Smith, Jr., who led the SWAC in assists and steals per game (number two in minutes per game) finished with just seven points on 3-of-9 shooting from the field and added four assists, four steals and three rebounds for Grambling.

With 16:13 left to play in the second half, Grambling cut the deficit to five points when Prince Moss scored a basket for the Tigers. In a five minute span, Texas Southern expanded their lead from five points to 15 and the Tigers simply could not recover.

The Tigers were led by Justin Hopkins who scored a game-high 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field. Fellow Tiger Yahuza Rasas produced a double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing 13 rebounds in the victory.

Inside the Numbers
> Grambling State shot 43 percent (25-of-58) from the floor and 80 percent (8-of-11) from the charity stripe
> Texas Southern was 28-of-60 (47 percent) from the field and 13-of-17 (77 percent) from the foul line
> GSU registered 34 rebounds, including nine on the offensive glass
> Texas Southern pulled down 35 rebounds, with nine coming on the offensive end
> The Tigers (GSU) finished with 30 points in the paint, 24 bench points, seven second-chance points and eight fast break points
> The Tigers (TSU) recorded 36 points in the paint, 20 bench points, 10 second-chance points and 10 fast break points
