PRAIRE VIEW, Texas | The Grambling State University women's soccer team is headed back to the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championship game after knocking off SWAC regular season co-champion, and No. 2 seed, Alabama A&M 2-0 in the semifinals on Friday night at the Prairie View A&M Soccer Complex on Friday Night.
The victory also served as redemption for GSU (9-7-2) as they avenged a 1-0 loss to AAMU (10-8-1, 8-1-0) on Oct. 27.
The Lady Tigers will be making their fourth SWAC title game appearance in five seasons when they face No. 1 seed Prairie View (12-3-2) on Sunday morning.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Sophomore forward Lizbeth Aguero quickly put the Lady Tigers in front 1-0 when she received a beautiful pass from Miranda Urbizu and deposited the ball in the back of the net in the 4th minute.
- The Lady Tigers kept pressure on the Lady Bulldogs throughout the remainder of the first half, consistently attacking the offensive zone, while limiting scoring opportunities on the defensive end.
- SWAC Offensive Player of the Year, Kailey Pena, put Alabama A&M away for good in 89th minute when she struck the back of the net for the second goal of the contest.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Britt Verhees played all 90 minutes in goal for GSU, tallying one save
- Alabama A&M goalkeeper Jodi Medina made three saves while allowing two goals
- The Lady Tigers outshot the Bulldogs, 10-2
- Grambling State put five shots on goal
- AAMU registered one shot on frame
- GSU held a 6-5 advantage on corner kicks
- Grambling State was called for offsides six times
- There were 17 fouls called

On the victory over Alabama A&M:
"We're delighted with the result today. The girls executed the game plan wonderfully and they came out with great energy at the beginning of the game to put us ahead"
On Prairie View:
"It will be great a competition and we have respect for Prairie View. But we're excited to play and we're beginning to peak at the right time. We're definitely looking forward to the challenge on Sunday.
