Taylor registers double-double at Incarnate Word

SAN ANTONIO, Texas | Junior forward AJ Taylor registered his second double-double of the season as the Grambling State University men's basketball team fell behind early in the first half and could not overcome the deficit in falling to Incarnate word, 72-62, on Saturday afternoon at the McDermott Center.

Taylor finished with 13 points and 13 rebounds, including nine boards on the defensive glass, as the Tigers (3-7) had three players in double figures. Danya Kingsby led the way with a team-high 20 points, including 7-of-8 from the free-throw line, with six boards and one blocked shot. Shawndarius Cowart recorded 15 points, four rebounds, one steal, one assist and one blocked shot.

Grambling State shot 20 percent from the floor in the opening half and fell behind 37-19 at the break. The Tigers outscored the Cardinals, 43-35, in the second half.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Incarnate Word (record here) raced out to an 11-5 lead after a layup by Johnny Hughes II with 12:48 remaining in the first half
- The Cardinals used a 10-3 run over the next four minutes, capped by a 3-pointer by RJ Glasper, with 8:12 left
- The Tigers closed the gap to 23-13 after an AJ Taylor with 6:38 remaining
- However, Incarnate Word closed out the final six minutes on a 14-5 run to take a 37-19 advantage into the break
- The Cardinals extended the lead to 40-20 after a trey by Benjamin Griscti just 20 seconds into the second half
- The Tigers chipped away at the deficit and used a 14-3 run, capped by a Tra-Michael Moto bucket, to cut the margin to 43-34 with 15:27 remaining
- Incarnate Word pushed the advantage back to double digits, 50-36, after a layup by Brandon Swaby, with 10:20 left
- Grambling State closed the gap to to 66-58 after a Taylor layup with 1:01 remaining, but could not get any closer

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Grambling State shot 35.5 percent (22-for-62) from the floor and 59.1 percent (13-for-22) from the free-throw line
- Danya Kingsby led the way with 20 points, on 5-of-14 shooting, with six rebounds and one blocked shot
- Shawndarius Cowart added 15 points, shooting 50 percent (5-of-10) from the field, with four boards, one assist, one steal and one block
- AJ Taylor tallied 13 points and 13 rebounds, with one steal and one block
 -The Tigers recorded 26 points in the paint, 13 second-chance points, 12 points off 19 Incarnate Word turnovers, 12 fastbreak points and four bench points
- Incarnate Word shot 51.0 percent (25-of-49) from the field and 70.0 percent (14-of-20) from the charity stripe
- RJ Glasper paced the Cardinals with 21 points, on 7-of-12 shooting, with two rebounds and one assist
- Johnny Hughes III poured in a double-double of 14 points and 10 boards, with two blocks and two assists
- Josh Morgan tallied 13 points, seven rebounds, two assists and one block
- Benjamin Griscti added 12 points and eight boards, with two assists and one block
- The Cardinals finished with 28 fastbreak points, 26 points in the paint, 13 bench points, eight points off 12 Grambling State turnovers and four second-chance points

UP NEXT
The Tigers continued their road swing with a trip to Birmingham, Ala. on Tuesday to take on UAB at the Bartow Arena. Tip-off is slated for 6:30 p.m.
