Moton drops career-high 22 points in 3rd straight win for GSU

Grambling opened up game with 19-0 run on the road at Southern on ESPNU

BATON ROUGE, La. | The Tigers used a 19-0 to open the game as they defeated conference rival Southern 72-69 at the F.G. Clark Activity Center in Southwestern Athletic Conference action. Sophomore guard Tra'Michael Moton generated a game-high 22 points and buried 8-of-11 field goals to lead Grambling to their third straight SWAC victory of the year in a contest was televised on ESPNU.

"I'm really proud of our guys tonight," said Tigers head coach Donte Jackson. "Our young sophomores stepped up in a major way in a tough road environment."

Grambling (8-8 overall, 6-3 SWAC) cruised to a 19-point lead before the Jaguars closed the gap to save points at the break. Redshirt sophomore Sarion McGee continued to show his presence in the paint with his second consecutive 20+ point game and fourth-straight double digit outing, this time dropping 21 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the field while completing his second-straight double-double by grabbing 11 boards for the Tigers.

Southern's (4-7 overall, 4-3 SWAC) high man was Samkelo Cele who buried 4-of-6 from downtown and produced a game-high 27 points in the loss.

The win earns Grambling the season split with the arch rival Jaguars as the Tigers sit in third place in the SWAC men's basketball standings.

 

Inside the Numbers

> Grambling State was 28-of-54 (52 percent) shooting from the field and 10-of-17 (59 percent) from the charity stripe

> Southern shot 42 percent (26-of-62) from the field and 41 percent (7-of-17) from the free-throw line

> The Tigers registered 36 rebounds, including 31 on the defensive glass

> The Jaguars pulled down 33 rebounds, with 11 coming on the offensive end

> GSU finished with 36 points in the paint, 33 bench points, six fast-break points and five second-chance points

> SU registered 36 bench points, 28 points in the paint, six fast-break points and 16 second-chance points
