GRAMBLING, La. | Grambling trailed 14-7 at halftime before allowing 28 third quarter points en route to a 48-21 loss to Arkansas-Pine Bluff at the Eddie G. Robinson Memorial Stadium in Southwestern Athletic Conference action. The loss snaps Grambling's
six game win streak over the Golden Lions dating back to 2014.
"Embarrassing," said GSU head coach
Broderick Fobbs. "We are a work in progress and there's a lot of things going on. At the end of the day, it's up to me to make sure I get it corrected. Everything is on the table and everybody is being evaluated. We have to be better and play better football and today we just didn't do anything right," Fobbs explained.
UAPB (2-0 overall, 2-0 SWAC) opened the game up by recovering an unexpected onside kick, but the Tigers defense stood strong and made a crucial stop on fourth down to force the turnover on downs. That's when Tigers quarterback
Elijah Walker threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown to give the Golden Lions a 7-0 lead.
After eight consecutive combined punts, the Tigers (0-3 overall, 0-3 SWAC) got on the board with a four-yard rushing touchdown from redshirt freshman
CJ Russell to tie the game at seven apiece in the second quarter, but UAPB responded 38 seconds later with a quick 58-yard strike from quarterback Skyler Perry to Harry Ballard III to regain the lead before the half.
Walker completed 13-of-26 passes for 174 yards and found
Kobe' Ross for a 39-yard touchdown catch while
Geremy Hickbottom completed 5-of-10 passes for 30 yards.
Keilon Elder led Grambling's ground attack with 65 yards rushing and also generated a game-long 77-yard touchdown pass to
Kash Foley on a trick play. Russell rushed for 28 yards and one touchdown on the ground.
On the defensive end, redshirt sophomore
Lewis Matthews led the G-Men with seven total tackles while teammate and junior defensive back
Hurshie Williams produced a team-high five solo tackles. Redshirt junior defensive back
Kenan Fontenot had a sensational one-handed interception in the first half and finished with two tackles in the loss.
