Heroic play at the plate saves Grambling baseball in 4-3 thriller over Texas Southern

GSU wins 2nd game in 2 days; looks to sweep TSU in Game 3 on Sunday at 1 p.m.

GRAMBLING, La. | Grambling State pitcher Kerry Boykins Jr. struck out six Texas Southern batters, gave up just three hits and allowed no runs in 7.1 innings of work as Grambling defeated TSU 4-3 in Southwestern Athletic Conference action at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones Park in game two of the weekend series.

The win marks the second consecutive victory in as many days for head coach James Cooper and the Tigers.

Grambling scored in the first inning when Jeremy Almaguer generated an RBI-ground out that brought home the speedster Cameron Phelts. The Tigers scored again in the third inning when Jordyn Smith produced an RBI-single that allowed Almaguer to cross home plate.

After several innings of Boykins' brilliance on the mound, Grambling added two insurance runs in the fifth inning when Smith launched a 2-run shot to left field as GSU cruised to a 4-0 lead.

Shortly into the eighth inning, Grambling pitcher Kimani Bailey replaced Boykins Jr. for a brief moment to close out the inning before GSU pitcher Kaelin Woodard came in for relief to start the ninth inning and close out the game. That's when Texas Southern made a furious run and scored three quick runs to bring the score to 4-3 in favor of the G-Men after an RBI-double from Oscar Ponce. Subsequently, the game-tying run rounded third base and was almost certain to tie the game as the cut off man, GSU second baseman Almaguer, made a last-chance desperation throw to home plate. Tigers catcher Ben Avila made a sensational game-clinching play at the plate by tagging the base runner as he slid home.

GSU's Smith finished with a game-high three RBI in the victory while Phelts was the only player on the diamond to score multiple runs.

Brian Williams (1-2) was served his second loss of the season for Texas Southern.
