PINE BLUFF, Ark. | The Grambling Tigers baseball team won its second consecutive game in lopsided fashion, plowing through Arkansas-Pine Bluff 11-1 in the opening game of the weekend series at the Torii Hunter Baseball Complex in Southwestern Athletic Conference action. GSU has now outscored its opponents a total of 26-4 during the last two contests.
The Tigers (7-14 overall, 4-3 SWAC) jumped on top early with three runs in the second inning as
Jeremy Almaguer hit an RBI ground out that scored
Rafael Ramirez, III for the first run of the game.
Kevin Breaux then produced an RBI-single to score
Joseph Gunn. Moments later,
Cameron Phelts generated an RBI-single to right field as Breaux scored another run for the Tigers.
Breaux, a sophomore catcher out of Reserve, La. filled the stat sheet and produced a total of three runs, two-RBI and two hits in the victory.
Grambling poured in another three runs in the fourth inning when Gunn
hit his third home run in four days with a shot to right field. Then, with the bases loaded, Phelps brought home Almaguer with another RBI-single. Gunn finished with another big day and produced three runs, two hits and an RBI, while teammate Phelts generated a game-high three hits.
GSU added five insurance runs in the seventh inning, including a vicious 3-RBI base-clearing line drive to left field by
Chrystian Mervilus. The sophomore from New York's three-RBI total was good for a game-high.
Grambling redshirt junior pitcher
Kerry Boykins, Jr. (3-1) was brilliant on the mound and earned the victory, striking out five Golden Lion batters as he allowed just one earned run and only five hits in six innings on the mound.
UAPB pitcher Bryce Roesch (0-1) picked up the loss and gave up six earned runs in 3.1 innings of work.
