MADISON, Ala | The Grambling State baseball team (17-26) won against Texas Southern at Toyota Field on Friday morning to stay alive in the 2021 SWAC Baseball Tournament.
Solid pitching performances from both
Marc Luna and Jordan Martinez resulted in the game being scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning.
Cameron Bufford drew a one-out walk and scored on an RBI single from
Jahmoi Percival. Texas Southern responded with one run on two hits.
In the eight inning, TSU plated one run on one hit to take a late 2-1 lead. Grambling responded in the bottom of the eight inning plating four runs. The slugger
Cameron Bufford got the hot inning started with a single to left field. Percival drew a walk followed by a three run homer crushed to left field by
Jordyn Smith to retake the lead 5-2.
In the top of the ninth inning, Texas Southern attempted to rally back by managing to get two on base but both runners were left stranded.
Inside The Numbers
- Grambling State finished with five runs on seven hits, committed two errors, and left eight on base.
- Jahmoi Percival led Grambling by going 2-3 with a triple, one run, and one RBI.
- Cameron Bufford, Jordyn Smith, Jeremy Almaguer, CJ Mervilus, Kevin Breaux each had one hit.
- Marc Luna started on the mound for Grambling lasting 6.1 innings. He gave up one run on four hits, four walks, and seven strikeouts.
- Kaelin Woodard (1-1) and JC Bonilla pitched in relief.
- Texas Southern finished with two runs on seven hits, committed one error, and stranded ten on base.
- Justin Cooper led Texas Southern at the plate by going 3-4.
- Jordan Martinez started for Texas Southern and went 7.1 innings. He gave up four runs on five hits, five walks, and struck out nine.
- Adolf Castillo (1-3) and Brian Williams pitched in relief.
