Grambling State Softball Splits Prairie View Double Header

Prairie View, Texas | The Grambling State Softball team (11-16, 8-8 SWAC) split its doubleheader with Prairie View (15-13, 12-5 SWAC) on Tuesday afternoon at the PVAMU Softball Field, winning game one 6-3 before falling 6-5 in game two. 

Game 1: GSU 6, PVAMU 3
The Lady Tigers took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning with a solo homerun to right field by Cameron Ellis which marked her first homerun of the season to get things started. The Lady Panthers answered in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI single that tied the game 1-1. 

After a scoreless third inning, Grambling went ahead in the top of the fifth inning plating runs in consecutive innings. 

Anaiyah Fultz was able to tie up the game in the fourth inning, hitting a solo shot to center field. The Lady Tigers were able to score two more runs in the top of the fifth with a single RBI from both Tytianna Robinson and Nyah Jones. Grambling plated another run in the sixth on an error by Prairie View to secure the victory in game one. 

"Payton Shells was amazing for us in the circle", head coach Nakeya Hall said. "She was able to keep Prairie View off balance all game. We showed a little more discipline at the plate and was able to capitalize on that." 

Inside The Numbers 
  • Grambling State finished with six runs on eight hits, and left eight on base. 
  • Nyah Jones led the Lady Tigers by going 3-4 with one RBI. 
  • Kayla Robinson had one hit. 
  • Payton Shells (6-4) started on the mound for the Lady Tigers and lasted 7.0 innings. She gave up three runs on seven hits, one walk, and nine strikeouts. 
  • Prairie View finished with three runs on seven hits, committed two errors, and stranded five on base. 
  • Brianna Grays led the Lady Panthers at the plate by going 2-4. 
  • Mya Hall (5-8) started for Prairie View and went 5.0 innings. She gave up four runs, on six hits, two walks, and struck out six. 
  • Deja Tapia pitched in relief. 

Game 2: GSU 5, PVAMU 6 
The Lady Tigers started hot in the second game of the double header with a two-run homerun by the heavy hitter Anaiyah Fultz to get scoring started in the first inning. Cameron Ellis continued to have a good day at the plate by hitting a two-RBI double to left center in the second inning to give the Lady Tigers an early 2-0 lead. 

After scoreless first and second innings, a combination of solid hitting for Prairie View and the Lady Tigers errors in the in the third and fourth inning allowed the Lady Panthers to tie the game 4-4. 

Grambling answered back in the top of the fifth inning to gain the lead back, as India Wells scored on a wild pitch to give the Lady Tigers a 5-4 lead. Prairie View answered in the bottom of the fifth inning by plating a run to tie the game 5-5. The Lady Tigers attempted to rally back in the sixth and seventh, but the Lady Panthers secured the win with a RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning. 

"We made too many fielding errors and when you play the caliber team such as Prairie View you can't expect to win that game", head coach Nakeya Hall added. "Overall, I am proud of my team's performance and we look forward to carrying this momentum into next week."

  • Prairie View finished with six runs on eight hits, committed one error, and stranded seven on base. 
  • Serena Antone led the Lady Panthers at the plate by going 2-3 with two RBI. 
  • Jerrica Rojas started for Prairie View and went 5.0 innings. She gave up five runs, on six hits, three walks, and struck out three. 
  • C. Johnson (5-0) pitched in relief.
