GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University men's basketball team escaped with another conference victory as the Tigers defeated Mississippi Valley State 68-64 on Saturday afternoon on the Willis Reed Court at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
Eric Parrish finished the game with a double-double, posting 17 points and 12 rebounds to go along with three assists and two steals. Parrish went 2-of-2 at the free-throw line and 1-of-1 from behind the arc.
Three more Tigers scored in double-figures. Tra'Michael Moton recorded14 points, four assists, three rebounds and one steal. Prince Moss also scored in double figures for the Tigers, contributing 11 points with six rebounds and one steal. AJ Taylor finished with 10 points, four rebounds, one assist, one block.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Grambling State (6-12 overall, 4-2 SWAC) trailed Mississippi Valley State, 5-2, to open the game as Caleb Hunter hit a 3-pointer to give the Delta Devils a boost at the 18:36 mark.
-Moss knocked down a 3-pointer to tie the score, 9-9, with 15:04 left in the first half.
-MVSU (1-16, 1-6) led by as many as seven points three times in the first half, and the Tigers found a way to close the gap each time.
-The Tigers took the lead for the first time with13 minutes of play when A'mari McCray scored on a put back, giving GSU a 29-28 lead with 3:37 to go in the half.
-Grambling State carried a 33-32 lead into the break.
-GSU opened the second half with a good jumper by McCray, stretching their lead to 35-32 at the 19:50 mark.
-Mississippi Valley State's Gary Grant scored back-to-back layups to give the Delta Devils the lead, 36-35, at 18:52
-Grambling State trailed until 4:3 1left in the second half as Parrish tied the game at 58 with a layup. Parish then put the Tigers in front 60-58 with another bucket with 2:20 to play.
-The Tigers finished the game on a 10-6 run to secure victory over the Delta Devils.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Grambling State shot 41.4 percent (24-of-58) from the floor and 100 percent (16-of-16) from the free-throw line
- The Tigers finished with 16 bench points, 38 points in the paint, eight second-chance points, eight fast-break points and 12 points off eight Mississippi Valley turnovers
- Mississippi Valley shot 39.1 percent (25-of-64) from the field and 33.3 percent (6-of-18) from the charity stripe
- Gary Grant paced the Delta Devils with 17 points, five rebounds and four assists
- Caleb Hunter registered 13 points and two rebounds
-Devin Gordon recorded 13 points and seven assists
- The Delta Devils finished with 15 bench points, 33 points in the paint, 14 points off 15 Grambling State turnovers, five fastbreak points and nine second-chance points
