BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | Grambling State University placed two student-athletes on the 2022 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) football postseason teams, the conference announced on Tuesday morning.
Defensive end Sundiata Anderson and linebacker Lewis Matthews were selected to the All-SWAC Second Team.
Anderson played in 10 games for the Tigers and was third on the team in tackles with 50, including 23 solo stops. He added 12.5 tackles for a loss of 64, while leading the Tigers in sacks, with seven. In addition, recorded two quarterback hurries, two pass breakups, two forced fumbles and blocked one kick.
Matthews, who ranked 14th in the nation and tops in the conference in solo tackles, while also second in the SWAC in total tackles and 27th in the FCS , led Grambling State defensively with 102 total tackles, including 61 solo stops. The junior linebacker had 12 tackles for a loss of 28 yards and a pair of sacks.
Jackson State led the voting with 13 selected to the all-conference teams, followed by Florida A&M (12), Southern (5), Alcorn State (4), Bethune-Cookman (4), Alabama A&M (3), Arkansas-Pine Bluff (3), Texas Southern (3), Grambling State (2), Alabama State (2) and Mississippi Valley State (1).
Jackson State garnered many of the major postseason awards as the Tigers will enter this weekend's SWAC Championship Game ranked fifth in the nation and unbeaten at 11-0 overall.Â
JSU quarterback Sheuder Sanders and linebacker Aubrey Miller Jr. were named the SWAC's Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year, respectively. Kevin Coleman Jr., of Jackson State, earned Freshman of the Year and Alcorn State's Jarveon Howard was selected the Newcomer of the Year.
Jackson State's Deion Sanders was named the SWAC Coach of the Year.
