Shells and Wells Tabbed to All-SWAC Softball Preseason Teams

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | Grambling State University pitcher Payton Shells and infielder India Wells were among those chosen to the All-Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Preseason Softball Teams, the conference announced on Tuesday.
 
Shells, who earned All-SWAC Preseason First-Team Honors, made 13 appearances in the circle, going 6-5, with one save. She finished with eight complete games, along with 30 strikeouts and 15 walks.
 
Wells, who was named to the All-SWAC Preseason Second Team, led Grambling State at the plate with a .333 average in 66 plate appearances. She finished with 22 hits, including one double, along with scoring 19 times and driving in four. On the base paths, Wells was a perfect 17-for-17 in stolen bases.
 
In the preseason predicted order of finish, Grambling State was selected fourth in the western division with 67 points. Texas Southern garnered 11 first-place votes and 105 points to claim the top spot. Alcorn State (99) and Prairie View A&M (88) were selected second and third. Southern (62) and Arkansas-Pine Bluff (41) wrapped up the predicted order of finish in the west.
 
In the eastern division, Alabama State received 11 first-place votes and 120 points to earn the top spot. Jackson State (94), Alabama A&M (85), Florida A&M (80), Bethune-Cookman (72) and Mississippi Valley State (32) rounded out the east.
 
Grambling State opens its 2022 season in the River City Classic on Friday, Feb. 11. The Lady Tigers will play Tennessee State, Kentucky State, Xavier (La.) and Rust College at the event.
