Lady Tigers Suffer Setback versus ULM

GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University softball team dropped an 11-4 decision to the University of Louisiana at Monroe on Tuesday afternoon. The Lady Tigers led for 4-1 after  the first three innings but ULM reeled of 10 unanswered runs to secure victory. 

Anaiyah Fultz led GSU at the plate, for 1-for-3 with three RBI. However, the Lady Tigers were unable to find consistent offense, scattering two throughout the game. 

Ja'Lynn Bonner got the start on the mound for GSU,  earning a no decision, working 3.2 innings, allowing five runs on three hits with three walks and one strikeout. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Grambling State (5-3) got on the board first in the bottom of the first when Anaiyah Fultz hit a two-run RBI single to right field

-Louisiana-Monroe (10-2) scored its first run in the top of the third inning on a GSU throwing error that allowed Ashlan Ard to score on a bunt from Lourdes Bacon

-Grambling State answered in the bottom of the inning scoring two more runs, stretching its lead to 4-1.

-The Warhawks found their momentum in the top of the fourth inning taking the lead, 5-4, with a two-run RBI double from Alexis Chavez. In the fifth inning, a two-run home run gave the Warhawks a 7-4 advantage. ULM led 8-4 heading into the bottom of the fifth

-ULM continued to pushed across three runs in the seventh, highlighted by a two-run homer from Andie Edwards to extend its lead 10-4. 

- The Warhawks added one more run in the seventh inning. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Grambling State finished with two hits while committing three errors

-ULM wrapped up the day  with 13 hits and two errors

-Kassidy Giddens (3-0) took the victory for the Warhawks racking up three strikeouts and allowing only one run in 4.2 innings of relief. 

-Dacia Richard (2-2) took the loss for the Lady Tigers, tossing 1.1 innings, giving up three runs on five hits, while fanning one batter. 

UP NEXT

The Lady Tigers return to action on Feb. 25 to begin the HBCU Celebration Classic in Montgomery, Ala. GSU opens play versus Alabama State with first pitch set for 7 p.m.
