GSU Drops Ralph Garr-Bill Lucas HBCU Classic Opener to FAMU

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. | Shemar Page struck out a season-high 11 batters, but it wasn't enough to power Grambling State University to victory, as the Tigers fell to Florida A&M 7-3 in game one of the Ralph Garr-Bill Lucas HBCU Classic presented by Truist, at Coolray Park on Friday night.

Page (1-1) exceeded the nine strikeouts he notched in last week's season opening victory over Jackson State, but surrendered five runs, three earned, on five hits in 5.2 innings of work.

The Tigers also struggled a bit defensively, committing four errors that led to three runs.

Jarficur Parker had the hot bat for GSU, going 3-for-5 with a double. Aries Gardner went 2-for-5, driving in a run. Julian Murphy also registered two base hits in four plate appearances.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Rattlers got on the board quickly in the first inning. Following a leadoff single, Joseph Pierini hit an RBI triple to put FAMU up 1-0. Two batters later, Ty Hanchey stroked a double to left field, scoring Pierini to extend the lead to 2-0.
  • FAMU (3-3) added two more runs in the top of the fourth go up 4-0.
  • Grambling State (2-2) cracked the scoring column in the bottom of the fourth Julian Murphy and Areies Gardner opened the frame with back-to-back singles. Keylon Mack singled to right field, scoring Murphy and trimming FAMU's lead to 4-1.
  • Trailing 5-1 in the sixth inning, Mack reached base on a dropped fly ball by shortstop Jalen Niles. LaMarcus Jones entered the game for Mack as a pinch runner. After a single by Jarficur Parker moved Jones to second base, he stole third, giving GSU runners on first and third with no outs. Nasir Frederick reached first base on a throwing error by Niles, scoring a Jones. However, two strikeouts and fly out ended any scoring threat for the Tigers in the inning.
  • FAMU outscored GSU 2-1 over the final three innings.
