GRAMBLING, La. | Grambling State University is saddened to learn of the passing of former Grambling State University baseball standout Gerald Williams.
Williams was drafted in in the 14th round of the 1987 amateur draft by the New York Yankees following a stellar final season at GSU, batting .409 with 44 RBI, 18 stolen bases and nine home runs.Â
Williams' major league career spanned 13 years (1992-2005) with six teams. He played for the New York Yankees, Milwaukee Brewers, Atlanta Braves, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Florida Marlins and New York Mets.
In 1,168 games, the New Orleans native hit .255 with 365 RBI and 85 homers. He also stole 106 bases.Â
He was 55.Â
