GSU Pushes No. 9 Mississippi State, Falls 2-1

STARKVILLE, Miss. | The Grambling State University baseball team took No. 9 Mississippi State to the wire, but couldn't pull off the upset bid, falling 2-1 to the Bulldogs at Duly-Noble Field on Tuesday Evening.

Starting pitcher Jacorey Boudreaux (0-1) kept MSU batters off balance for the majority of the night, not with sizzling fastballs, but a mix of off speed pitches and placing a premium on placement. Boudreaux pitched 6.0 innings, surrendering two runs on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks.

Much like the Bulldogs, GSU wasn't able to get much going at the plate, scattering five hits through the contest.

Parker Stinnett (1-0) earned the win for MSU, entering in relief of Jack Walker in the sixth inning. Stinnett held GSU to no runs on two hits and eight strikeouts in four innings of work.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • With one away in the top of the second inning Grambling State (2-5) strung together back-to-back hits to put a runner in scoring position. Aries Gardner hit a shallow fly ball that dropped in left field, then Keylon Mack singled down the right field line to move Gardner to third base. Gardner scored on a wild pitch to put GSU on top 1-0.
  • The Tigers threatened again in the top of the third when Terry Burrell reached base on a one out walk, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt. He tried advance to third on a pitch that scooted away from MSU Luke Hancock, but oversold at third base and was called out on the attempt to get back to the bag.
  • Mississippi State (5-3) picked up its first hit in the bottom of the fourth on a Tanner Logan single to left field. The Bulldogs tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth on sacrifice fly to right field.
  • MSU scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Brad Cumbest stroked a home run to left centerfield.
  • The Tigers couldn't find an answer for the homer in their final two at-bats, falling 2-1.
