Page Delivers Eight Strikeouts, Tigers Fall 2-1

GRAMBLING, La. | Grambling State University starting pitcher Shemar Page, put forth another dominant performance striking out eight batters, but GSU fell to Alabama State 2-1 on Friday afternoon at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones Park. 

Page (1-2) kept ASU batters at bay for much of the afternoon with a powerful fastball. He surrendered just two runs (one earned) on five hits and four walks, while serving up eight strikeouts. 

At the plate, the Tigers scattered six hits over nine innings. Trevor Hatton scored the lone run for GSU, hitting a towering home run to left field in the bottom of the second inning. Hatton went 1-for-3 on the day. 

Alabama State's Breon Pooler (3-0) earned the win, working 6.2 innings, allowing one run on five hits with three walks and seven Ks. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the first inning, Alabama State (7-8) got a runner on base on a fielding error by GSU shortstop, Cameron Bufford, with one out. Corey King advanced to third base on a single from Trenton Jamison. Sacrifice fly by Angel Jimenez put the Hornets on top 1-0.
  • Grambling State (4-9) responded in the bottom of the second inning when Trevor Hatton smashed a solo homer to left field, tying the game at 1-1.
  • The Tigers threatened to take the lead in the third frame, loading the bases up with two away, but Pooler was able to get a fly ball to left field to close the inning. 
  • The Hornets plated another run in the sixth courtesy of an RBI single by Ian Matos.
  • GSU put runners in scoring position in the seventh and eighth innings, but couldn't produce any runs

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Both teams racked up six hits 
  • Trevors Hatton's homer was his second of the season
  • Shemar Page notched his 36th strikeout of the year, which is the second most in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC)
  • JC Bonilla, Corben Peters and Heath Backhus made relief appearances for Grambling State 
  • ASU's Luis Rodriguez picked up his first save of the season, allowing no runs on one hit with one strikeout
