Tigers Drop Series Finale Versus Prairie View A&M

GRAMBLING, La.  | After clinching the weekend series on Saturday, the Grambling State University baseball team fell 8-3 to Prairie View A&M in Sunday's series finale at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones Park. 

Connor Rudy (2-4) got the start for the Tigers, working six innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and one walk. 

Cameron Bufford, Aries Gardener and LaMarcus Jones drove in runs for the Tigers. Bufford and Jones hit a pair of solo home runs in the seventh and ninth innings. Bufford went 1-for-5, while Jones went 1-for-4. 

Derrick Curry (1-2) picked up his first victory of the season for the Panthers, limiting GSU to one run on five hits, with six Ks and three walks. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Aries Gardner gave Grambling State (7-13 overall, 2-1 SWAC) an early 1-0 lead on an RBI single to centerfield in the bottom of the fourth inning.
  • Prairie View A&M (5-13, 1-2) tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth inning, scoring on a wild pitch. PVAMU took the lead in the sixth inning on an RBI single from Gilbert Gonzales to go up 2-1.
  • The Panthers utilized a five-run seventh inning, stretching its lead to 7-1.
  • Cameron Bufford helped the Tigers get a run back in the bottom of the inning with a homer, his fifth of the season, to right field.
  • A homer by Prairie View A&M's Jayden Williams, grew the Panthers' advantage to 8-2.
  • In the bottom of the ninth, LaMarcus Jones attempted to spark a late rally with a leadoff home run to left field. PVAMU's reliever, Joshua Larzabal, retired the next three batters, preserving victory for the Panthers.
