Baton Rouge, La. | The Grambling State University baseball team dropped a low-scoring affair to Southern University on Friday night at Lee-Hines Stadium, falling 3-2 to the Jaguars.
GSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning, but surrendered three runs in the bottom of the frame, and never recovered.
Jarficur Parker led the Tigers offensively, going 3-for-5 with an RBI. John Garcia accounted for GSU's other RBI, smashing an RBI double while going 1-for-3.
Grambling State starting pitcher Shemar Page (2-3) had another high strikeout game, fanning eight Southern batters, but gave up three runs on five hits to go along with six walks through 6.0 innings. Page threw 116 total pitches.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Grambling State (7-15 overall, 2-2 SWAC) snagged a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. LaMarcus Jones led the inning off reaching base on an error. Following a groundout by the next batter, Jarficur Parker drove Jones around to score with a single to centerfield.
- After Cameron Bufford drew a walk, John Garcia smoked an RBI double to deep right field, putting GSU on top 2-0.
- Southern (5-16, 2-2) responded quickly in the bottom of the inning with JJ Rollon hitting a leadoff triple just past a diving Trevor Hatton. O'neill Burgos drove Rollon in to score with an RBI double to right centerfield to cut the Tigers' lead to 2-1. SU tied the game 2-2 on a groundball to the third base. Another RBI double put the Jaguars in front 3-2.
- Grambling State nearly rallied back in the bottom of the ninth inning, when a two-out double by Terry Burrell III gave GSU runners at second and third. Parker hit a hard line drive to left field that was caught, scoring the win for SU.

- JC Bonilla made a relief appearance for GSU, working 2.0 innings, striking out two and allowing one hit
- SU's Joseph Battaglia (2-3) tossed 7.0 innings, giving up two runs on eight hits, with three Ks and two walks
