JACKSON, Miss. | The Grambling State University baseball team surrendered a pair of three-run innings in falling, 9-5, to Jackson State during its midweek game on Tuesday at Braddy Field.
Grambling State (8-17) fell behind 3-0 after one inning and closed the gap to one run twice. However, Jackson State (13-12) blew the game open in the sixth with three runs and didn't look back.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Roy Peguero started for Grambling State and faced three batters before J.C. Bonilla came on in relief
- Jackson State plated three runs in the bottom of the first, all with no hits
- In the bottom of the first, JSU took advantage of two walks, two hit-by-pitches and an error to grab the 3-0 lead
- Grambling State battled back in the top of the second with two runs on two hits
- Trevor Hatton and John Garcia drew back-to-back walks to open the frame. With one down, Julian Murphy singled through the left side as Hatton scored
- David Valory Jr. Followed with a base hit to center as Garcia scored
- GSU had an opportunity to tie the game in the third, but stranded a runner on third
- Jackson State picked up a run in the bottom of the third as Ty Hill tripled and scored on an El'Rico Riley ground out
- Grambling State cut the deficit to 4-3 with a run in the top of the fifth
- Jarficur Parker began the inning with a walk and advanced to third on a Shemar Page single through the right side
- Parker scored on a sacrifice fly to center
- Jackson State blew the game open in the bottom of the sixth with three runs on just one hit
- Riley led off the frame with a hit and JSU took advantage of three straight hit-by-pitches, a passed ball and a wild pitch to extend the lead to 7-3
- Grambling State opened the eighth with back-to-back walks to Garcia and Cameron Bufford, but Jackson State got out of the inning as Garcia was caught stealing, while Murphy and Valoy struck out
- JSU put the game away with two runs in the eighth
- Grambling State got a pair of runs in the ninth, but was unable to complete the rally
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Grambling State scored five runs on five hits, committed a pair of errors and left nine on base
- Jackson State finished with nine runs on six hits, recorded two errors and stranded five baserunners
- GSU registered 10 walks and struckout nine times
- JSU finished with five walks and seven strikeouts
- Shermar Page paced the Grambling State offense by going 2-for-5, with a double
- Trevor Hatton went 1-for-3, with two RBI, one run scored, one triple and one walk
- Roy Peguero threw just 10 pitches, but gave up two unearned runs in taking the loss
- Antonio Valde picked up the victory in 1.2 innings pitched. He surrendered one run on one hit, with two strikeouts and a pair of walks

Grambling State opens up a three-game Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) series, beginning on Friday at Alcorn State. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. from McGowan Stadium.
