GSU Opens Series With Road Loss

HOUSTON, Texas | The Grambling State University baseball team jumped out to a 2-0 lead midway through the second inning, but could not hold off Texas Southern in a 8-2 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) loss on Thursday night at MacGregor Park. 

GSU (13-20 overall, 8-5 SWAC) saw the 2-0 lead evaporate as Texas Southern (16-15, 7-6) scored eight straight runs, including five between the fourth and fifth innings, to pick up the conference win. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 
- Grambling State picked up a run in the top of the first inning as Jarficur Parker ripped a one-out single to center and came around to score on a passed ball, giving GSU the 1-0 lead 
- The Black and Gold added to the lead in the second as LaMarcus Jones was hit by a pitch with one out and scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Terry Burrell III 
- Texas Southern cut the deficit to 2-1 with a run in the bottom of the frame 
- TSU grabbed a 3-2 advantage as Tyrese Clayborne belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth 
- Texas Southern continued to add to the lead, scoring three runs on two hits, to extend the margin to 6-2 in the fifth 
- TSU plated two more runs in the bottom of the eighth to push the lead to 8-2 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
- Grambling State scored two runs on six hits and left 11 on base  
- Texas Southern finished with eight runs on eight hits, recorded one error and stranded 12 on base 
- John Garcia paced Grambling State at the plate by going 2-for-5 
- Jarficur Parker, Trevor Hatton, Cameron Bufford and Keylon Mack each collected one hit 
- Page (4-4) threw 111 pitches in five innings of work as he surrendered six runs on six hits, walked four and fanned five 
- The five strikeouts were the lowest output for the pitcher this season 
- J.C. Bonilla and Santiago Hungria III pitched the final three innings in relief 
- CJ Castillo (1-2) started on the hill for Texas Southern as he gave up two runs on five hits, with four strikeouts and four walks in five innings 
- Adolf Castilo and George Osbourne combined to pitch the final four innings in relief

Grambling State returns to action in Game 2 of the SWAC series against Texas Southern on Friday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. from MacGregor Park.
