GSU Tallies 15 Hits in Sunday Loss

GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State University baseball team dropped game three of its weekend series versus Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) rival Southern, 14-9, on Sunday afternoon at R.W.E. Jones Park at Wilbert Ellis Field.

Grambling State (19-24 overall, 14-7 SWAC) out-hit Southern, 15-12, and even held a 5-0 lead after three innings, but couldn't keep the surging Jaguars at bay. Southern (15-26, 12-9) scored runs in each of the final six innings to propel itself to victory.

Roy Peguero got the start on the mound for Grambling State, earning a no decision after pitching 4.2 innings, surrendering three runs on four hits, to go along with three strikeouts and five walks. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Grambling State got off to a strong start in the bottom of the first inning when Terry Burrell III stroked a leadoff double up the gap. Jarficur Parker followed with a single through the right side of the infield, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead. 
  • Cameron Bufford smack his conference-leading 11th home run of the year, a two-run shot to left field, stretching GSU's advantage to 3-0 in the bottom of the second.
  • After a Southern issued a walk to Shemar Page and gave up a hit to Trevor Hatton, John Garcia drove both runners around to score with a two-RBI single, giving the Tigers a 5-0 cushion after three innings.
  • Southern got on the board in the in the top of the fourth inning on a solo homer by Tremaine Spears, cutting the GSU's lead to 5-1.
  • The Jaguars added two more runs in the fifth inning to pull within two runs, 5-3.
  • With two outs in the top of the sixth, SU grabbed its first lead of the contest, 6-5, on a three RBI double that fell in deep centerfield by Spears
  • Grambling State responded in the bottom of the frame, with Parker and Page driving in a pair of runs to put the Tigers back on top 7-6.
  • Southern outscored Grambling State 8-2 over the final three innings to clinch the series. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Grambling State scored nine runs on 15 hits, leaving 10 runners on base. The Tigers committed three errors
  • Southern plated 14 runs on 12 hits, while committing one error. The Jaguars stranded 12 runners
  • GSU's Heath Backhus (0-2) was tabbed with the loss, tossing 0.1 innings, giving up two runs on two hits, with one K. 
  • SU's Mykel Page (1–2) got the win in relief, allowing two runs on five hits with four strikeouts in 3.0 innings of work,

UP NEXT
Grambling State returns to action on Tuesday evening with a home matchup versus Jackson State. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
